The LYFA Cheer program teaches TEAM, discipline, technique, safety and confidence in a FUN and safe manner. We offer choices in fundamental Cheerleading, Dance and Step. We promote an enjoyable, athletic environment for both boys and girls. Children from the age of 5 to 12 who are zoned for Leander High School are eligible. If you are outside of this area, please contact us at LYFACheer@gmail.com. There are no required tryouts and no previous experience is necessary. This is a great way to make lasting friendships and wonderful memories.
All LYFA Cheer, Dance and Step Teams will cheer on their Lions at every football game. Competitive teams will compete to earn a spot at the AYC National Championships.
Whether they cheer at just the games or cheer for competition, the LYFA Cheer, Dance and Step Teams get the best training to prepare them for their future in their respective sport.
The LYFA Coaching staff is required to pass a background check, complete an AYC National Youth Cheer Organization Coaching Certification course, and attend local coaching clinics.
Youth Cheerleading, Dance and Step is a very safe sport at all ages with the proper training, technique and gear.

Our goal is to use football and cheer to foster a confidence and sense of self-worth that extends to all children. Youth with cognitive and physical disabilities are given the opportunity to transform their disabilities into abilities and a chance for great achievements. The children build a network of friends, support, and trust. Spirit division rules are available at MYAYF.com.

The LYFA season typically begins at the end of July and ends in early November for non-competitive squads and in early December for competitive squads. We will post the date in late spring and send out emails.
Teams will cheer on their Lions at every football game. Games typically begin the first Saturday of September following Labor Day Weekend. Regular season games are on Saturdays unless there is a makeup or playoff. The game season is typically 7 – 9 games long depending on the makeup of teams. Competition teams will play longer seasons if they make playoffs and move on to Regional and National play.
In addition to the games, Cheer, Dance and Step will compete at the CTAYF Local Cheer Competition in October. With advancement, the Competitive team(s) will compete at the SWAYF Regional Cheer Competition in November and the AYC National Cheer Competition in December.
The Cheer squads will learn cheers, chants, a dance, tumbling and stunting. The Dance and Step squads will begin working on half-time routines.
During the first two weeks of the season, practices may be 5 days per week to get the required conditioning hours in. After that, practices are generally 2-4 days per week until school starts. Once school starts, the practices are cut back to 2-3 days per week based on the AYC guidelines. Frequency and length of practice is determined by each head coach.
We try to keep the practices within a 5 mile radius of Leander High School at the local elementary/middle schools. There might be practices outside that radius if lights are required. In mid-September we move into local elementary school gyms.

Squads are made based on age. However, our league is growing and we will most likely have to divide squads within divisions. We will take into account all requests (sibling, friend, coach) and skill level to make squad division as fair as possible. We will also evaluate all potential members of the competition cheer squad. We ask that all those that wish to be on the competition squad have strong cheer, jump, stunt and tumbling fundamentals mastered.
All sibling, friend and coach requests must be submitted on your registration.
Yes. We are a nonprofit, volunteer run organization, and are dependent upon parent volunteers for: coaching, concession duty, team parent duties, game day chains, MPR (Minimum Play Count) administration, board membership, and fundraising. All families joining LYFA are required to partake in our League fundraiser and game day volunteering consisting of field chains, MPR and concession duty (not during your game). Teams can have their own fundraising, in addition to the required LYFA fundraiser, if there is a chance they might move on to Regional or National competition.
